The City of Los Altos recently received the largest grant in its history, a $7.3M OBAG3 grant to execute a Complete Streets plan for North San Antonio Road from Foothill Expressway to El Camino. This is an exciting project that will include protected bike lanes that are much needed to connect from the new El Camino Bikeway to Foothill Expressway and everything in between, including local schools and Downtown Los Altos.

The Safe Routes to Downtown Los Altos Team worked closely with the City of Los Altos and County of Santa Clara to support this a grant application for a Foothill Expressway Bicycle/Pedestrian Study in February of 2023. The goal of the study is to Improve Safety for Pedestrians at Foothill Crossings, and for Cyclists on Foothill Expressway.

Over 100 letters were received in support of this grant from the community at large and from other key players such as Stanford University, Employers on Foothill and the Silicon Valley Bike Coalition. The Grant was formally approved in June of 2023 and funding has been allocated in the Budget along with matching funds from the County.

This short stretch of roadway is a key connector between Los Altos Hills, Foothill Expressway and the new proposed improvements on North San Antonio Road. Currently the road is not wide enough to support protected bike lanes and is a Share the Road bikeway, but SR2DTLA believes this road should be studied for improvements for multi-modal users. Pedestrians have a sidewalk, but scooters, skateboards and bikes have to share a dangerous stretch of road where parked cars take away the safety riding area for bikes and abruptly push cyclists into the auto traffic lane.
